I did not grow up with Halloween, but I learned about it through my husband and connections to my faith that led down rabbit holes to discover the history and connections to the holiday. I discovered a deep affinity with the whole night and of course the real meaning of it. For me, now, as a mom of a precious and independent 10-year-old, I love getting into the holiday with her. She helps me live vicariously through the eyes of a child, something I fear we give up too quickly or may have never had. Some of us don’t get the opportunity to have a family that gives us the love and support we need. She allows me to have fun with this night, and so now, my favorite part is the decorating. I cannot express how giddy I get seeing the decorations gobble their way through the aisles of the store. Suddenly the fall colors and napkins and pumpkins give way to skeletal figures, witches hats, costumes of all forms and functions, creepy dolls that sing, haunted houses, animatronic dummies that seek to give you a heart attack. I just love it! I think Halloween is this time that you get to be a super weirdo and get away with it! I just don’t think you have to do it with a huge chunk of money, the dollar store has a ton of stuff that you can use, you can even get crafty and DIY your decorations to get your house looking super creepy! Pinterest and Google are your friends! Get out there and get into it and have fun, because even though this night has a lot of sacred links to my faith, it is a night of wild abandon, and it is ok to go out there and enjoy yourself. Have fun, be safe, and remember…
Trick or Treat, smell my feet, give me something good to eat…
