Steampunk is a “ subgenre of science fiction or science fantasy that incorporates technology and aesthetic designs inspired by 19th-century industrial steam-powered machinery”. A great living example of this is the famous Dickens Fair in San Fransico, California. Traditionally a celebration of Victorian culture and really the Christmas Carol by Dickens himself, the fair is attended by many costume enthusiasts who attend wearing every century imaginable. Many sport fancy gears or technological additions to their outfits. Having attended the fair two years in a row, the view of these additions from the outside is one of sheer delight. Its absolutely amazing to see what people come up with in terms of adding technologic pieces to a hat, a dress, a broach, and more. Steampunk seems to allow us to live in this alternative fantasy in which we can combine things we adore from the past and enhance them. In fact, it does such a huge clap back to the way the Victorian culture was. They were obsessed with advancement and technology. If you ever look at what they came up with, it’s absolutely clear they were driven to improve just about every aspect of life. Now you can experience what it would be like if the Victorian’s had the technology they dreamed of.
