The Bright One
The Bright One is a quirky tale, spinning the traditional views of the unicorn completely on its horns and giving us a journey that is beyond friendship, beyond loyalty, beyond the human and unicorn connection.
The book is written as a continuous narrative with small minor transitions throughout. The book follows a variety of perspectives and view points.
Alexa – (protagonist) 18-year-old high school student who has a love of art and 90s grunge music
Mateo – Alexa’s best friend who always has her back
Sid – Alexa’s crush
Una – the unicorn from another world Alexa finds in a park bathroom
The Monster – An otherworldly beast made of smoke and cloud who will stop at nothing to destroy Una
Andrea – Alexa’s sister
Cynthia – Alexa’s mother
Rodger – Alexa’s father
This wild adventure happens over the course of several days as Alexa, Mateo, Sid, and Una jump into Alexa’s Honda Civic and race across the country from Wisconsin to Oregon.
The story begins at Birkmose Park in a Twin Cities suburb, Riverview, inspired by my hometown of Hudson, Wisconsin. Alexa, Sid, Mateo and Una later race across half of the country (Minnesota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada and finally Oregon) to find a Rift that will help Una escape the deadly monster.
Who is the true monster in this story? Is it the cloud monster who is after Una or is Una more dangerous than it appears?
From The Author
Tell us why you wrote the series?
-After I wrote my first novel, I was sure I would never have a good idea again. And then this story showed up and I couldn’t help but writing it.
What influenced this series?
-The story really came out of nowhere. I tried to imagine a strange way to find a magical creature appear in your life and came up with a unicorn trapped in the park bathroom. The rest of the story evolved from a single event.
